Would I be the a-hole if I retract my offer to help out a fellow single parent with last-minute childcare?

I'm sorry, but no. You don't. You don't pay tuition, housing, food, diapers, transport, everything, and childcare all on your own, all on $13/hr. You have help. Student loans, grants, child support, welfare, relatives, etc. We don't know how much help she's getting, but it definitely seems minimal.

In my state, $15/hr disqualifies you for childcare assistance, so it's very possible that's not available to her. In addition, it's not about the money. Daycares aren't open until 6am, which is after her shift would start it she worked weekdays.

You've put me in the awkward position of defending what seems to be a pretty terrible parent, so I want to be clear I'm not defending this woman. I'm just saying, in response to you, that it's completely unreasonable to assume she can live off $15/hr and still pay for childcare.
