Don't recommend school textbooks, for a variety of reasons that have been repeated ad nauseum in various places. Not to mention how expensive they tend to be.

I do everything electronically, these days. I use an 8" Kindle Fire and buy my stuff from the Kindle Store and Audible. Extremely effective and convenient. Also accessible on my iPhone, iMac, and Windows Laptop.

I use the books as a basis for learning topics, and then use multiple workbooks and exercise books to practice the grammar topics. I always have some exercises to do, and I don't need to scour the internet for them. This also means I won't feel compelled to push myself forward before I'm really comfortable with the topic

Beyond that, I have low level graded readers and alternative methods (like Teach Yourself French Complete and Perfect Your French - quite cheap in eBook form) that I use for review, along with other materials.

I use Assimil New French with Ease as an audio method.

Workbooks I use:

Practice Makes Perfect Complete French Grammar The Ultimate French Review and Practice Schaum's Outline of French Grammar

I also use 501 French Verbs, which I have in Physical Form as well (it was cheap at the bookstore, and it's one of those things I won't have to highlight or make notes in, ever). Dictionary is in the Kindle.

The amount of money I saved getting eBooks instead of physical books have paid for the device.

I tried Anki, but I didn't find it useful. I have French language partners, now, and I find that I learn more way more effectively through conversation. So many words tend to go straight to long term memory, that way.

I did take iTalki lessons for a couple of months specifically to get the phonetics under my belt, though...

I use these materials, but I have put together a fairly decent study schedule myself. I find it hard to stay motivated and practice well if everything is in disarray. Some accountability is useful :-)

Good Luck!
