I would like to hear some hacks regarding dental hygiene

This is the system I've been using so far:

  1. Rinse with CloSYS (unflavored mouthwash) for a minute.

  2. Brush with a paste contains about 1/2 teaspoon of salt (1 part of table salt + 4 parts of baking soda) and hydrogen peroxide.

  3. Fire up the Waterpik ultra flosser, run it along the gum line. I usually use water with half a cap of Listerine Total Care.

  4. Rinse with Listerine Total Care (zero alcohol) for 1 minute, rinse with water.

  5. Rinse with ACT alcohol free mouthwash for 1-2 minutes, spit and don't rinse.

I learned steps 1, 4, and 5 from a book called Cure Tooth Decay. The general idea was that the three mouth rinses do different jobs. I thought why not try it out and ended up liking it very much.

Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide was a substitute for toothpaste. Most toothpastes contain foaming agent sodium lauryl sulfate, which often irritated my oral cavity, causing some small ulcers. I saw a couple posts about using spiced sea salt as substitute and was hooked. After a couple bottles of commercial one I found this salt + peroxide one from the site of a dentist who practices natural medicine. It's thus far the only oral cleaner that actually makes my teeth feels clean.

The Waterpik was because I hate thread floss. The idea of re-distributing the bacteria is disgusting and I don't want to see them all sticking to the floss and then to my fingers.

And I also carry a bottle of xylitol mint. I pop a couple tablets after meals.

Also, I have learned to hold your toothbrush (I use an Oral B electric) as if you're hold a pencil. This reduce the force on gum line and avoid abrasion to the teeth. It's just a film of bacteria so no need to go that hard. For the ones that went in very deep, no matter how hard the brush will not get there.

Anecdote: I can't be more pleased with it. I've started putting this self-care method together because my gum refused to not get inflamed no matter how diligently I brushed. A couple root canals (which subsequently led to implants) down, I thought "enough is enough" and started seriously looking into this. So far I have been using this method for two years, no inflammation, no cavity, and no canker sore. Just came back from dental cleaning last month and 95% of the time the hygienist just ran the tool along the gum line and found nothing. (She still got some small quantities of plaque behind some molars and two lower incisors.)

I'd say if you'd like to change the practices, change them bit by bit and see if you like the results. I'd say the first thing is to swap in a couple salt brushing every week; then the water floss; then the mouth rinses. For me I could immediately tell the difference by the feeling of my mouth and smell of my breath the next morning.

Also, fuck sugar. It's bad for every aspect (dental, nutritional) and should only be touched on a weekly or less frequent base.
