Why would someone kill their best friend's wife?

What could provoke a murder?

I'd rephrase that to a slightly different question: in what kind of environment can murder occur?

Almost anything can provoke the actual murder. Humans are animals, killing other humans is just a thing we do sometimes. It's like asking which raindrop is causing the rain. Certain circumstances increase the likelihood of precipitation, that's all.

Of course that can never be an acceptable answer to a society founded on principles of justice and non-violence. Moreover we fancy ourselves rational creatures who would never. Thus, we spend immense effort and time on trials, investigations and other forms of posturing. Certainly there must be a reason. Oh, certainly.
