[WP] An alien invasion happens during an alien invasion.

It began on a cold Thursday evening. The sound of thunder echoed overhead but there was no storm. Flashes of light lit up the sky, but it wasn't lightning. High in the heavens were streaks of orange and blue like twisting ribbons of fire. None of us yet grasped the seriousness of this spectacle. People stumbled out of their homes to get a better look. The streets filled with curious spectators watching with wonder as the sky popped and shimmered and flickered with splashes of color. Then, amongst the growing murmur of the crowd, someone behind me shouted "LOOK !!". I turned around to see an outstretched arm pointing overhead. Directly above us thousands of points of light began falling like rain. As the brilliant glowing balls fell closer, they started getting bigger, and bigger. First there was yelling, then screaming, then panic as the crowed scattered like insects. People ran in all directions, knocking each other to the ground. A women slammed into me and I almost fell backwards as one of the giant glowing spheres that were rocketing towards the ground stopped inches above the pavement, then gently touched down and dispersed in a cloud of mist.

Stepping out of the mist were 25 alien creatures marching towards us like soldiers. They were dressed in black and silver combat suits, that looking strangely like elaborate costumes. They had two arms and two legs, and sticking out of the back of suit was a hairy tail that sort of wagged when they walked. Their comically large heads looked like a weird sort of dog-lizard, with reptile skin, glowing yellow eyes, a snout with a snub nose, and floppy furry ears for some reason. Their green hands had patches of brown fur, and were holding large black rifle-like weapons up against their shoulders. The side of each gun had a glowing blue cylinder that surged with energy. Across the city I could see hundreds of glowing spheres touching down in the distance one after another, each depositing more alien lizard-dog soldiers.

Suddenly one of the aliens barked an order at the others and they stopped locked-step and stood at attention. And by "barked" I mean an actual bark, like a ..... dog. One of the aliens in the group had a slightly different uniform with gold pinstripes. He was obviously their Commander. He stepped forward from the group, took a small box from his belt and began speaking into it. His amplified voice boomed with a scratchy irritating intensity:

"People of Earth, we are the Iguana-Terriers, from the planet Alphacanine. We declare ownership of this world !! You are inferior in every way !! You will surrender to us, or be destroyed !!"

What...the...hell ? The dog-lizards speak English, with kind of .... British accent. Everyone just stared at them in disbelief. Suddenly, the Commander dog-lizard-thing pointed his rifle at a car, fired, and the vehicle exploded in a shower of sputtering sparks and smoke. Again, everyone started to panic and run in all directions. I ducked down behind a dumpster while the soldiers started fanning out.

Just then, a sound broke through the chaos. A sound unlike anything that I have ever heard. It surged and groaned and grew louder and louder. Like an engine, but organic, and almost angry. Across the street by the soldiers it appeared....out of thin air. A rectangular shape took form, and as the sound stopped with a sudden thump, it sat there for all to see. A strange blue box with a white light on the top of it. I could almost make out some writing on the front of it. I got up and cautiously started across the street. I could read it now, it said "Police [something] box" in big white letters, and it seemed to be made of....painted wood. That's weird, I thought. The front door creaked open as music swelled in the background. I don't know where the music came from. It seemed to be everywhere, and was very thematic and exciting, like a big reveal. As the door swung open, a brilliant yellow light poured out illuminating the street, and then the silhouette of a figure stepped into the radiance with a strong mythic presence. The lizard-dogs took a step back and were obviously concerned. Just then the music stopped and out of the box stepped an energetic young man with a brown coat, black slacks, a striped shirt, and a bowtie, and, I swear this is true, a red ... fez ?!? He also seemed to be holding what looked like a ... mop.

"HELLO !!" he shouted. "I'm the Doctor". He spun around looking at everything that was going on. "And you are not supposed to be here" he continued while pointing directly at one of the aliens. Out of the box then stepped a your girl with fiery red hair and a tight mini skirt. She seemed carefree and curious, then sort of skipped a few steps and stopped next to the young man.

Just then, another sphere of light landed right next to me, and I jumped and tumbled out of the way. More dog-lizard-things emerged. I scrambled to back away and then got up and crossed the street towards the safety of the dumpster. What the hell is going on here ? Who are these people ? I couldn't hear them clearly anymore, so I just crouched down and watched.

The Doctor, as he called himself, seemed confidant and unfazed. He handed the mop to the Commander and kept walking and talking while studying the soldiers uniforms. The Commander angrily threw the mop down and barked another command. All of the soldiers snapped up their guns and trained them on the Doctor. The man didn't even flinch, he just kept walking and talking and gesturing manically. After a few minutes of the Commander monologuing, the young girl then sauntered over and whispered something in the Doctor's ear. The Doctor looked over at the soldiers, then snatched a gun right out their hands and gave it a good look. The startled soldiers intensified their stance. He then reached into his breast pocket and drew some kind of sliver tool with a glowing green tip. It made an eerie ultrasonic noise, and he waved it around haphazardly at the gun. The gun sparked and fizzled, and the glowing blue cylinder on the side of it faded dark. He tossed the gun at the soldier than looked back at the Commander.

Something then changed. In an instant, the Doctor flipped from a chaotic fumbling goof, to a man of fierce intensity and locked eyes with the Commander. With three large strides, he walked right up to the Commander, just inches from his lizard-dog face, and stared him down, seemingly indifferent to the dozens of weapons trained on him. Heated words were exchanged and the Commander raised his hand as if to give the order to fire. The Doctor just looked at him, then took a step back and with an arm stretched skyward, he activated his sonic tool which screamed louder than ever. Street lights exploded in sparks that showered down in the darkness, power lines arcked and buzzed angrily. Then like a wave, all of the soldiers guns started sparking and smoking and fading to dark. The stunned lizard-dogs shook their weapons and tried to fire them but it was no use. All of their guns were disabled.

The Doctor then lowered his arm and pointed the sonic thingy directly at the Commander while shouting something about a "Shadow Proclamation" ? The Commander stood there for a moment, then dropped his head in defeat. His fluffy ears fell forward as he hissed at the soldiers. And that was it. The dog-lizards all marched back to where they landed, and a sphere of light formed around them and rocketed towards the sky. All across the city, this army of aliens fled our world without a single shot fired.

The Doctor reached down, snatched the mop off of the ground, then spun around to look at the young girl. She clapped her hands together and with a big smile on her face, she skipped-walked towards the mysterious blue box and disappeared inside of it. The Doctor stopped, and took one last look around, then saw me by the dumpster. He glanced at me for just a moment and smiled, then stepped inside. I couldn't believe what just happened! The doors closed on the strange blue box, and the light above it began to flash, and then that amazing sound returned. That iconic sound I will never forget, like an engine of fate churning through the night. This man, this Doctor, came out of nowhere and saved us all. With a look and a word and sonic tool thingy, he defeated an entire army, then left without so much as a thank you.

As the magic blue box faded away, one thought kept racing though my mind.....where the hell is that theme music coming from ?
