[WP] A father and son sit down for a serious talk. The father is going to tell the son he is the last of an ancient race, and must carry on the bloodline. the son is coming out to the father. neither knows what the other has to say.

"What's your name, Son?"

"... Kayden James Palmer, dad."

"The...?"

A pause, "Sixth."

"The sixth. You know what that means, son? That means there are five more people with your name in our tree, and possibly more. This name is who you are. You are Kayden. Just like I'm Kayden, and how Grandpa's Kayden, and on and on. We've been passing this name through our bloodline for decades."

Jayden looked sheepish. "I know, dad."

The fifth put his hand on the sixth. "This name is everything to me. It's everything to us. And you're my only son. We tried to have another, but there were some... problems. I won't get into those, but you have a very important job, son."

The sixth met eyes with his father, "You want me to continue the line, don't you dad?"

"Yes. I hope you'll take this opportunity. This name means everything to us, to your family."

The sixth got up and paced to the other side of his bedroom. "Dad, I need to tell you something. I love you, and making you happy is everything to me, but if I don't tell you, I'll just explode."

The fifth walked over to his boy, "What is it, Kayden?"

The sixth wiped a tear out of his eye, before it could roll down his pale cheek.

"Dad, I know I'm the sixth. I know it mean so much that I'm the sixth. But I'm Kayden! I'm me, not some number, or a branch in a tree. I know how much 'deepening our roots' means to you, but I, I just can't."

The father wiped some moisture from his son's face, "Why not, son?"

The sixth took the fifth's arm off his shoulder.

"Dad, I'm in love. And I've never been so happy. Every day makes me feel like I'm the best person - the best Kayden I could possibly be."

"But dad, I'm -"

"I know" said the fifth, cutting his son off. "I know, son. I'm so sorry. I know. I desperately want this name to keep going, but there are some things more important than that. I'm so sorry, son; I was so focused on getting a seventh, I didn't love the sixth enough. And I love you, son."

Full tears now. "Why did you want me to have a kid then?"

"Desperation? This line means a lot to me, son, but you mean so much more. And I'd rather have a Kayden who I can love than a number I can pore over. I'm so sorry son, but you have my blessing. I want you to be happy, and whatever makes you happy, I'm all for."

The sixth touched his father's face, and broke down into his lap. The fifth stroked the hair of his son.

The fifth chuckled, "I never liked 'Kayden' that much anyway."
