[WP] A film Noir style murder mystery set in a fledgling colony on Mars.

"Knock knock."

Granger mumbled and pulled the sheet up over his head. It was yanked down.

"Up and at em." Lewis stomped on Granger's air mattress, hard enough to make his head pop up. Granger moaned; this wasn't going to be a good morning for sudden motions.

"You're awake enough to listen so I'm gonna start talking. We had a fatality last night."

"Number five." Granger pulled himself upright. "They're gonna start docking your pay."

"It was Barowitz."

Granger ran a knuckle over his stubble.

"Know her?"

"Yeah, we swapped shifts running a workshop a couple of years back."

"Well, I'm up to my ass in meetings now. I need an assistant while I deal with this."

"I'm out of Public Safety."

"I know. Hydroponics." Lewis rolled an empty bottle across the floor with his foot. "Looks like you found a very fulfilling career."

"There are no fulfilling careers at Opportunity Base. Three months to the big day."

"Three months," agreed Lewis cheerfully. "So I want to walk out of here without anything left on my desk. You're going to sober up and punch the clock and help me clear my task list, because you may have given up on life but I intend to get a transfer back to Houston."

"Why the hell do I care about your career?"

"Because I know where your still is. Or was."

With great effort and dignity, Granger lifted his head and fixed Lewis with a stare.

"Give me a couple of weeks. Two weeks of solid work. Then you can go back to dismantling yourself." Lewis stood. "Until then, I need a deputy so saddle the fuck up."

Lewis left. Granger's displays pinged, and a list of new permissions scrolled down the left side of his field of vision while a red task icon blinked three times to his right.

405 tasks added to Work Schedule

Granger closed his eyes and sighed.
