[WP] A lone survivor in a deserted, post-apocalyptic future ponders the reasons why he still carries his smartphone

Still no signal. Jason sighed.

It had been a few days since he left D.C for Manhattan. Of course, he only really kept track of time because he kept checking his damn phone for a signal every half hour. He had hoped to get lucky in D.C, since it used to be so populated and important and all, what with politicians and bunkers and the president. But it had been just as much of a waste of time as all his other destinations.

He'd been lucky, if you thought about it. He'd already owned a battery-powered charger and without any signal to speak of, his phone's battery lasted far longer than he was used to. He still had his music when he wanted, most of the stores he'd loot would still have boxes of batteries for the taking, along with food and water and whatever else he would need, and he was getting some good exercise, walking all over the place. He was surviving the Apocalypse! Honestly. There really wasn't much more he could ask for.

Well, everything except for a goddamn signal.

One of the first things that went down was communications. At least, that's what happened in his town. Cell towers and electrical grids, first to go. Then people started dying. As people started dying, people started killing. Pretty much everything he'd expect would happen in an apocalypse movie, except in real life. When he started his journey, he'd hoped to find a signal and get on the internet somehow, find other people.

Jason shook his head and stopped in the middle of the highway. The sun was starting to set, he'd probably want to sleep for the night, make a fire and such. Siphoning gas from the cars strewn about was getting easier, and starting a small fire was easy when you had gas and batteries.

The fire flickered as Jason laid on the ground. Why was he looking for a signal anymore? It had been a year since he started walking and a year before that, he had holed up in California. He turned on his phone to check the time. 4PM. No 8PM. Time zones and all that. He found his playlist of choice and plugged his phone in to his portable charger. He slept.

Jason checked his phone. Still no signal. He was probably a day off of Manhattan now. He knew he was somewhere in Jersey, just not sure where specifically. He would figure it out sooner or later. Maybe visit Atlantic City sometime. But Manhattan seemed like it would have a better chance. He had time. He could just do Atlantic City next. Or Boston. He was sure that somewhere on the internet there would be a person to talk to.

Jason checked his phone again.
