I want to be a writer not a starving artist

Okay, this is a bigger conversation then.

The kind of job you want is something that has flexible hours, pays decently, and isn't too physically taxing (so you still have enough energy to make your work in your spare time). There are very few jobs that have all three.

These are jobs that some of my working artist/musician friends have done: nannying, tutoring, teaching, dogwalking, film/set design, gardening.

If you're a writer, I bet you could add copy editing/ad work to that list.

Actual jobs in the arts are highly competitive (e.g., director-of-programs-type roles).

There are pretty much no jobs that just pay you to write your own stuff or make your own art. The working equivalent of a job like that would be grants, which are a viable way to support yourself while you create work. But you need to have something to show already in your application because grants are highly competitive as well.

The college major thing is a different discussion. That depends a lot on what schools you get into and what kind of financial aid is available.
