I think you can't understate the importance of music in past political movements (Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Marvin Gaye, CCR, John Lennon, to name a small few). I wanted to write a song in the spirit of those times, and here it is!
Lyrics: Bernie why don’t we elect you my friend
Just let me know where I can drop my vote in
Sure naysayers will shout and they’ll cry on the news
Ignore them and show what the people can do.
Trade deals and riots and no middle class
Economy’s crumbling and it’s crumbling fast
The world of our children will be poisoned and grey
If oil spills and carbon keep paving the way.
Bernie there aren’t many out there like you
Who challenge the flow and the status quo too
It seems like each person in office has been bought
Hillary says she’s clean, but I’m guessing she’s not.
And some say your socialist leanings are wrong
But I say that word’s been feared for too long
If socialist means that we mandate fair play
Then call me a socialist and lock me away.
And no, I don’t know what’s best for everyone
But it ain’t the agenda of Capitol One
Big banks and CEO’s don’t think past their greed
And don’t seem to care if the rest of us bleed
And Bernie I think that you have us in mind
The everyday people who work in the grind
Who look out for our families and loved ones and friends
Who just want to know that of this madness will end
And I’m not gonna say you’re a savior in white,
Though if you’ve heard my song you’ll know I think you’re alright.
It just seems to me that you mean what you say,
And man, that’s rare in politics today
If you can’t make it, we won’t give up on the plan,
Cause the battle’s not lost when you lose the lead man
There’s still lots of us with plenty at stake,
Leader or not, we must make our own fates.
So Bernie know you’ve inspired lots of us
And we’ll help you campaign and we’ll make a big fuss,
We know it’s time to make changes within
And I think that helping you’s a good place to begin.
