WVU economists find that black NBA players receive 20% less than their counterparts in free agency, all else being equal

It’s not necessarily racist for them to identify themselves as one race, it’s just that when you’re raised mixed race, it’s pretty much indoctrinated into you to align with the minority race when you’re younger because you exhibit “characteristics” of the minority race that become more prevalent over time and it becomes a stigma to try to consider yourself the majority race because it’s like you’re shaming the minority for being a part of you as it’s obvious that you’re not purely the majority race.

Growing up mixed, I could pass as white until middle school where I developed a lot more black characteristics (my skin tone darkened, I started having a black barber etc., my facial hair was curly) some people even asked if I was Hispanic. Mom is white, dad is black, but both of them sort of pushed me towards the black identification because there’s this social perception that in order to consider yourself white, you have to be damn near pure (at least 9/10ths) and you got a lot more racism calls considering yourself white over black than black over white.

And being in the NBA where it’s at least 80% black just reaffirms that ideology in your brain. And for statistics’ sake, many data seekers will push mixed race athletes or people into their minority race just to satisfy a quota.

It’s more of the stigma that considering yourself white when you’re black too is “racist” that is bad. I couldn’t imagine if somebody like Blake Griffin or Klay told the world that they were “white”, there would be accusations of racial favoritism everywhere.

Screwed up society we live in
