WWE just uploaded Chris Jericho vs. Edge - World Heavyweight Title Match from WrestleMania XXVI

This match and feud will always be a bit of a disappointment to me. The story wrote itself: Edge and Jericho are two heels who team up to win the Tag Titles and bring relevance to them again, Edge immediately gets injured, Jericho finds a replacement partner and claims Edge wasn't good enough for the team, Edge returns and wins the Rumble, Jericho wins the World Title...boom. World title main event with a long build-up with two great stars.

But the buildup to the match after Jericho won the World Title at Elimination Chamber was terrible. Instead of just focusing on the story they already had, they made the whole feud about the spear and how Jericho was afraid of being speared. It was the only focus of the match for the entirety of the feud.

Finally, it's time for the actual match. This was, in my opinion, the first time we really got to see how the torn Achilles hurt Edge's in-ring work. He gets a pass because people love him and his character work was still alright. But watching Edge in his last year was pretty bad. He wrestled a lot safer and always seemed hesitant to hit big moves on people, probably because he was starting to fear for the safety of his neck, as well. He was still adequate, but not nearly as great of an in-ring performer as he had been in 2009 against guys like Cena, Hardy, and Mysterio.

While the WM match itself didn't end up being that bad, I'm always bothered by the finish. Sure, have Jericho go over Edge to surprise people and remind the audience that the returning babyface doesn't always have to win. I didn't mind that part. But if you're going to needlessly spend so much time hyping up the "spear" aspect of the match, wouldn't it have been great storytelling if the spear Jericho hits during the match was what finished Edge off? They use it as a false finish, and instead, the match ends a few minutes later when Jericho hits Edge with the title belt behind the ref's back and then lands a Codebreaker. Yawn.

Next week on SmackDown, Swagger cashes in on Jericho after Edge spears him and the rest is history. I don't really know what the gameplan was for Swagger winning the World Title in one of the most forgettable reigns of the last decade, but I will say that the constantly forgotten rematch that Edge and Jericho have in the Steel Cage at Extreme Rules is an excellent match. It's much better than their WrestleMania match and definitely worth watching on the Network if you have some time to kill.
