Yeah it look like he doge a bullet with that one

Oh they'll like him just fine. They'll just have the most ridiculous cognitive dissonance when it comes to liking him and their own views about society at large.

My father in law is super conservative, Trump-supporter. He referees for high school basketball games all over the state. He is absolutely the first person to go on and on about all of those illegal immigrants stealing our jobs and casting millions of fraudulent votes or whatever, ready to build that wall, and assumes that almost all of the asylum claims are baseless and people are just abusing the system.

Then some kid that he's interacted with a lot on one of the teams, that he really got along with, gets deported. And he was really broken up about it, he says "Well, he didn't deserve that, he was a good kid." And not one measly bit of introspection about his views of illegal immigrants in general, never missed a beat in his political rants.

Most conservatives aren't actively terrible to individual people, but they will cling to their stereotypes about what's going on off in the world that they can't see like absolute dogma. They literally just think in stereotypes unless a person is right in front of them, and they never think that those stereotypes might need updating in light of those experiences with all these good kids or whatever.
