I think I'd be hesitant to get any of my colleagues fired, regardless of their ethnicity. I'd definitely like for him to be reprimanded in some formal way, but I think the risk of getting fired is currently quite high and that's not an outcome I'm comfortable with (and it won't be my call anyway once management or HR gets involved). To be fair, casual racism is quite rampant here in New Zealand so if I started reporting it every time a white coworker made some snide remark about a different culture or ethnicity it would be a full time job, so a lot of times I just tell people what they said is fucked up and they'll usually backtrack, but very rarely are situations like that ever escalated to management. That's why I'm conflicted in this situation because I've told him before that his homophobic comments are not OK then a few days later he makes another homophobic statement.
