Yet another brave hero

I sold cellphones in New York for a while and had a large Hispanic family come in with nothing they needed to open an account at the time. They had kids, uncles and grandparents with them - everywhere. We were slammed as it was and I was attempting to get them set up on prepaid instead of contract due to their lack of qualifications, nothing personal, the contract carriers denied them. The gentleman I was speaking to spoke English to me but Spanish to everyone else. I wasn't going fast enough and one of the other adults with them start talking and they're quipping back and forth, I wasn't paying attention at first till I started to hear words I clearly understood.

I grew up in New Mexico(25 years) in a predominately Hispanic area, being white was weird to people. While I'm not fluent in Spanish I knew enough, and knew they were talking about me. I was singling them out and giving them the run around, then it turned into me being white. I stared at the two for what felt like a while but was honestly a few seconds and said aloud I don't understand everything you're saying but I know it's about me and not doing my job and being white, I'm doing the best I can and it's rude to assume the person you're talking about doesn't understand what you're saying. The man I was speaking to immediately got flustered in an embarrassed way and began to apologize, I finished the transaction in silence.

While I don't know if OP conversation even took place as hard as it may be to believe, situations like this can happen, maybe not exactly like it's portrayed but it happens.
