Yogurt- has anyone tried to start a yogurt from scratch? What did you use? Any tips appreciated~

Idiot-proof IP yogurt

Will need: 2x quart canning jars with lids, yogurt, non-fat powdered milk, thermometer

Powered milk absorbs excess liquid, and gives yogurt a firmer, store-bought texture. No straining needed this way

  1. Heat 1/2 gallon of whole milk in a large sauce pan slowly to 200F
  2. Immediately drop pan into ice bath in sink and cool to 104F
  3. Add 1/3 cup of yogurt per quart of milk (total : 2/3 cup) and 1/4 cup non-fat powdered milk per quart of milk (total : 1/2 cup) and mix
  4. Fill 2x 1 quart canning jars with milk mixture. Cover loosely
  5. Place both in a water bath (2 inches) of IP inner pot.
  6. Set to yogurt mode for 6 hours. Any longer isn't necessary
  7. Tighten lids down and store in frig

Done. This always works. Been doing this for 5 years now.
