Deeper Dive:

NOTE: please answer these questions based on an average day

Physical exercise: How many minutes of exercise does your dog get in each form…

  • Light, structured exercise: 10-15 minutes warm up/cool down on treadmill
  • Moderate, structured exercise: 20-30 minutes jogging on treadmill (1.5-2 miles)
  • Hard, structured exercise: 30-40 minutes of fetch
  • Light, self-guided exercise: 10-15 minutes
  • Moderate, self-guided exercise: 20-30 minutes daily
  • If your dog receives physical exercise that occurs only a few times a week, and/or you do not feel was summarized by the questions above, please describe it here: agility class 1x/wk (20-30 minutes of on-course time); agility training 2-3x/wk (30-40 minutes of on-course time); additional 1-2 hours of playing or hiking a day on weekends

Mental exercise:

  • Describe how your dog eats his/her meals: all meals out of puzzle toys
  • If your dog uses puzzle toys/brain toys, please list out his/her favorites: he eats 3/4 c of food a day; favorite toys are the Foobler and Starmark Pickle
  • Describe what types of training you do with your dog, and how frequently: competitive agility training 3-4x/wk
  • If your dog receives mental exercise you do not feel was summarized by the questions above, please describe it here: n/a

Behavior questions:

-** Can you tell when your dog hasn’t gotten enough exercise? If so, what does he/she do?** Obsessively find toys and try to demand play/tug; repeatedly ask to go outside despite not needing to potty; get overly excited at the prospect of fun - Does your dog have any behavioral issues? If so, please briefly describe them. Severe separation anxiety - Do you notice any changes in your dog’s behavior based on how much PHYSICAL exercise he/she receives on a given day? If so, please briefly describe. Yes, he is much much easier to live with if he's allowed at least some time to run off leash each day. Without running he becomes a basket case and his separation anxiety is much worse. - Do you notice any changes in your dog’s behavior based on how much MENTAL exercise he/she receives on a given day? If so, please briefly describe. Yes; he is much less like to "seek out trouble" if he has been mentally active.

Wrap-Up Questions

  • What activity seems to tire your dog out THE MOST? Mentally taxing agility training (i.e., technical skills) or a hard game of fetch
  • Have you noticed changes to your dog’s energy level in the time you have owned him/her? His physical energy needs have decreased dramatically between 18 months and 2 years; his mental energy needs have not changed and if anything have become greater.
  • Has your dog ever been injured while exercising? If so, what was the injury? Did it impact the way you continued to exercise the dog after he/she healed? n/a
  • *Do you have a fenced in yard? If so, how large is it? * Yes; very small (20'x20' or so)
  • Has owning a dog influenced your own level of physical activity? I am much more active now that I own a dog, particularly when the weather is bad.
  • How many people live in your household? Please list out by age and gender. 2, myself and SO (F/28 and M/27)
  • How busy is your household? (“I live by myself and rarely have visitors,” “My SO and I have 5 children who constantly have friends over and are running around the yard with the dog,” etc.)
Low traffic other than myself and SO. Visitors occasionally
