your friend who always has a knife

Right, someone opening boxes all day (eg, retail workers stocking product) should absolutely have a specialized cutter with safety features and a blade guide that prevents them from cutting into product. Box cutters are not smaller than your typical folding pocket knives - the blade may be smaller, but the overall length is the same and the occupy a lot more space in your pocket (unless you want a holster), and they don't typically fold for easy storage (the ones that do wouldn't really be appropriate for constant/repetitive use)

I'm not saying everyone should carry a pocket knife. I'm saying there is nothing wrong with carrying one. It's a tool. It's something that is handy to have. In my backpack I also have a slightly larger folding knife, a leatherman, a set of screw drivers, lock picks [and locks to play with], and various cables and adapters. I don't often actually need a displayport to HDMI or a RJ-45 to DB9 adapter, but that one time I was at a client site and they needed to hook a laptop to a projector for a meeting with executives, it came in pretty handy. Same concept applies for my pocket knife. I know what your thinking - just throw it in the backpack... but I only have the backpack when I'm working. The knife fits in my pocket and I don't even know it's there. Sometimes I have to cut stuff when I'm not working and not near my backpack or a well stocked kitchen full of knives and kitchen shears. Otherwise, it just sits harmlessly in my pocket, not hurting anyone or anything, just like the pen in my pocket and the multi tool bottle opener thingy that I have on my keychain.
