Your unborn child dies? None of my business.

Plus on many of the applications I've done they ask if I've been dismissed before; sometimes they allow me to explain and I'll put that it was due to internal politics and was determined that I wasn't at fault. But really do they even read that or just toss my materials away?

The latter. U.S. population has doubled since the 1970's. Jobs without some kind of crazy education barrier (e.g. doctor) are now flooded with applicants. Employers are looking for any excuse to reject applicants.

Unfortunately, if they call your previous employer (standard practice), your previous employer can disclose your position, how long you worked there, and whether you were fired "for cause".

Were you fired for cause or just for "underperforming"? If the latter, you can claim you were laid off or left to take care of family.
