Your Week in Blue

Sometimes I feel like management in Best Buy has turned into whomever can drink the most kool-aid. We aren't getting any good managers anymore and just people that suck up to the right people.

Ignoring the fact this holds true for most places, the bigger issue is metrics being an element of being promoted. Regardless of how you feel, being a good sales person does not make you a good leader and vice versa. A former supervisor of mine is the perfect example of this.

Prior to being management they averaged 70 BPs a month and easily lead our store. They were terrible at explaining it, even when I watched them do it they literally do the same things they say, yet it somehow works and they consistently pulled these numbers. After being a terrible leader they were forced to step down and now they average 80 TTS a month.

The core issue is, there are some people who just excel at one thing or another and simply can't teach it. One of my bosses effortlessly attaches sound, I can effortlessly upsell, another guy is great at building relationships that eventually pay off. None of these skills seem to be teachable, yet they're all kind of desired for the same job.
