Is youtube better than paid courses when it comes to learning illustration?

It depends. Youtube is a different learning media. It is good for audio visual learners. The problem with Youtube is that it's filled with a ton of garbage. It's not structured at all for you like a course outline. You have to sift through the trash and avoid the stuff that's really shallow. Most of the content dressed up as educational is either factually incorrect or extremely shallow. It's designed to make people feel like they are learning without the people doing any actual learning. It helps people feel like they are smart rather than actually make them smarter. I say most because there is content that is well researched and thought out. As a general rule, the more flashy and subs and views a video has, the less value it has and the less accuracy. One of the biggest examples is kurzesegat (sp?). It's extremely shallow flashy content but loved by the masses.
