You've see him a couple times already but it's time for a formal introduction... Say hello to Kevin, the Ivory-billed Aracari!

I've own budgies and a parrotlet and I've worked with all sorts of parrots/raptors in a zoo and on campus.

Kevin turned out to be such a pleasant surprise. I was really worried before getting him that I was going to swamp myself with the care of another bird, one that would require at least the same amount of attention and vigilance as my parrotlet, but so far Kevin has been a dream.

He's so independent, and can occupy himself with toys/the room literally all day long. I leave his cage open beginning when he wakes up until when he goes to bed because he doesn't get himself in trouble and is physically incapable of chewing or destroying things (so much money saved on toys as well!). That being said, he still loves scratches and will come hop on my stomach or shoulder if I'm sitting on the bed to nab some. If I really want to cuddle, I can keep him on my lap and we can happily spend the evening watching TV together. It's the perfect combo of lovable and low-maintenance that is a welcome relief sometimes from Simon's short attention span, demanding personality, and strict cuddling rules.

He's super quiet, mostly making low croaks or dog-like barks. He has a weird diet, but he's less picky and it's easier to prepare than the one for my parrotlet. He likes orange fruits/veggies so I supplement his main diet of papaya with yams, squash, carrots, cantaloupe, grapes, and blueberries. He eats a half cup of fruit/veg a day (along with low-iron softball pellets) and I chop everything up once a week. Before getting him I heard so many horror stories of how the worst thing about aracaris is how insanely messy they are, and how much of a pain it is to prepare fresh fruit daily. I got around the fresh fruit thing, and as for the mess: his poops are very solid, they clean up easily with almost no staining, and after wrapping his cage in an old sheet, and lying a towel in front of it, I have no food splatter anywhere.

The downside of aracari ownership may be their space requirements (Kevin's cage is roughly 3x2x5 feet) and natural predisposition for hemochromatosis, or iron storage disease. Because of his big cage I do spend twice as long cleaning it every week. Because of his iron storage tendencies I am really careful that he doesn't eat high iron foods, pellets, or citrus (Vit. C), and I supplement his diet with black tea 3 times a week. I also plan on taking him for more frequent check up to get blood work done to monitor the condition of his liver. The life expectancy for Ivory-billed aracaris is around 15 years, but most people say they already see problems with iron storage before they are 10. So it's kind of worrying.

Overall, I hope more people consider softbill ownership in the future! I would think that as more and more breeders pop up their prices might go down, and they are just such amazing pets if you have the space and time to dedicate to them. If you want the best of a parrot (and dog?) without the jealousy/grudge/tempermental issues, strong beak, or loud voice, an aracari may be right for you!
