So because of that along with the difficulties of a book being copied and possibly mistranslated over thousands of years we were taught to look for moral messages, not concrete accounts of historical events.

Problem is you still have to discard a lot of morally repugnant messages. What kind of message are we supposed to take from a story about god mauling 42 kids with bears because they mocked some guy? How about the one where god convinces a guy to ritually murder his son and he's totes down with it but then god's like "wait no jk I just wanted to make sure you'd do it". Sure tracks with the whole "omniscience" thing. Anyway I could go on but whoever's reading this is probably already bored.
