“Zeno, the founder of Stoicism, was, according to his contemporaries, only attracted to men, and his thought did not have prohibitions against same-sex sexuality.”

Almost all historical info is based on likelihood and not facts, simply because we weren’t there.

For example, we do not know for a fact that either Socrates or Jesus existed as historical people. It’s even stated by some that they were not. However, we do have enough circumstantial evidence to go on that suggests they were, so that’s what we go with until proven otherwise. History isn’t a matter of certainty. It’s a matter of educated guesses. All points of “fact” are only facts until new evidence is presented.

As of now, all evidence points to Zeno being gay or at least bisexual (like many of the men of his time). His critics said he was gay, his utopian vision of society was pro-gay, his biographer said he was gay, and it was stated that he only kept female maidservants so as to appear friendly to women when in fact he only slept with men. This are all things that we know. We have no evidence to the contrary. Therefore, based on the guess work of history, that’s the most likely “fact” until there is new evidence that proves otherwise.
