Tokyo Drift is probably the worst one, although I never saw 2 Fast. For me, the self indulgence of Dom’s character is half of the appeal of these things. Crash some cars, blow some stuff up, and spend the other 90 minutes talking about how Dom is better than everyone at everything while Vin Diesel refuses to move his face or raise his voice. That’s literally all I expect out of these films and I am rarely disappointed.
The complete and utter dissonance between what kind of person the movie tells us that Dom is and the performance that we’re seeing on the screen is magic. If you told me that Vin Diesel was doing some sort of Andy Kaufman-esque long-form comedy bit where he keeps starring in hollywood movies and refusing to act, I would believe you.
