When/why did “needs” come to include more than food, water, protection from the elements, and critical medical care?

X does not depend on Y.

Y is the outcome of being denied X

I'm simply using X as a stand in for whatever fundamental thing, like stinulation/entertainment or social contact, you want to put there.

Put it this way, need for what exactly? What are we trying to determine? What is the goal? If your goal is purely biological function, sure your trio will work.

If your goal is a normal life where people can be happy and what have you, you do need more things, the X factor if you will haha.

Now there will be some variability cuz people are all over the place, but the average, typical person needs certain things to live a "normal" life of happiness.
