The current amount of trash in our oceans

You were on to the right path then waffled about them doing a shitty job because of lax regulations. Some places like Sweden have actually ran out of trash to process because they've changed how they process their rubbish, less than 1% goes to landfill now. Other countries utilise China where they recycle it all, but even then they are now saying 'no more' as they are not going to be able to keep up with ongoing demand.

Rubbish like the above video in Bali comes thanks to tourism and the hotel trade, with hotels overencumbered with guests and waste management protocols that don't keep up with the amount of waste the hotels produced so it is then dumped and finds it's way into the ocean.
