[IIL] artists like Return to Forever, Death Grips, James Blake, Robert Glasper Experiment, Piglet, plus more in the description. [WEWIL]

Hip-Hop/R&B (since you like Death Grips, James Blake, RGE):

  • Dr. Octagon - concept album about an alien gynecologist who comes to earth
  • Lizzo - subversive feminine rap that uses "gangsta" imagery
  • Marijuana Deathsquads - hard to describe; they're friends with Lizzo
  • Madvillain - experimental hip-hop that uses cartoon soundtracks and old commercials in their sound
  • Shabazz Palaces - deep, dark hip-hop with big African culture influences
  • FKA Twigs - close to James Blake
  • GZA/Genius - member of Wu-Tang Clan
  • MethodMan - also from Wu-Tang Clan; this debut is pretty grimey
  • P.O.S. - Minneapolis rapper, friends with Marijuana Deathsquads and Lizzo
  • Tricky - highly experimental for its time; classic trip-hop with unique smoky, club-influenced low-bpm beats
  • Clipping - industrial hip-hop that plays with noise and tape hiss
  • Run the Jewels - kinda Death Grips-y?

Noise rock (since you like Hella):

  • Pissed Jeans - dirty punk rock
  • Unsane - ever played the first Tony Hawk Pro Skater?
  • Lightning Bolt - bass guitar and drums, plus a mic taped to the drummer's mouth
  • RACEBANNON - might be a little too abrasive, but I love this cover
  • The Locust - grind-influenced with electronic effects
  • Daughters - dissonant post-hardcore where the lead singer sounds like a deranged caricature of Elvis
  • Death From Above 1979 - dancy bass guitar and drums, quite abrasive but damn do you get into it

Progressive rock/Krautrock/Avant-Garde Metal (since you like Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson, and Animals as Leaders):

  • Black Bombain - long instrumental progressive rock jams; tracks are usually 15+ minutes
  • Primus - funk metal, but not RHCP kind; think deranged bass solos; check out "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" off the link
  • Can - seminal krautrock group with a flamboyant lead singer
  • Faust - more guitar-driven and contemporary progressive rock, but still kraturock nonetheless in style and influence
  • Neu! - krautrock in the vein of Kraftwerk
  • Celephais - progressive metal influenced by Lovecraft; it'll take some work procuring this one and I couldn't find a YouTube link, but check out the album I Am Kuranes
  • Mastodon - sludge-influenced progressive metal, at least on the album that I linked
  • Murmur - metal with an ENORMOUS King Crimson influence

For the record, in case you're wondering why you're downvoted: this sub generally looks down upon others who derogate others' music tastes through phrases like "most people's recommendations lead me to droning bands with no instrumental talent and a sadboy as a vocalist." I get the point you're making, but it comes across as snobbish and that's not an attitude that the sub wants to patronize. Just a heads up for next time.
