This isn't to convince you that this is good narrative so you should keep reading, but just saying. When I was skimming through TV Tropes but with spoilers off, I think there's an implication that this isn't an accident. Or, the hidden spoiler could have been about something else entirely.
Whatever higher forces were involved, I sure do hope it wasn't deliberately responsible for killing(?) all the males! D:
