Unfortunately it seems like following the rules is almost a certain death sentence to a lot of small businesses. I closed my business the day the order was announced and it’s been closed this whole time. I have yet to receive a PPP loan. My employees are home and on unemployment. Utility companies and equipment leases that are on autopay have withdrawn the monthly payments for services I’m not using. As a result, it has wiped out what little money I had in my account. My landlord calls me daily for rent, which I can no longer afford. My business has been here in Bakersfield for more than 75 years and I’m not sure that it will survive. When people post about losing everything if this quarantine doesn’t lift, I can relate because it’s a terrifying feeling to see everything you’ve worked for (for 10 years, in my case) disappear. So I’m not so quick to judge, especially since I’m not as vulnerable as a lot of small business owners whose business is their only source of income. Fortunately I have a side gig that’s still considered “essential”.
