Letter: Wonder Woman – Austin Mayor Steve Adler. Mic Drop par excellence

As a veteran i do get special treatment that civilians don't.

My college - paid for. My healthcare currently is completely free due to service related disability. I recieve preferred hiring in all federal jobs. I am head if the line for many social services. There are quite a few 'special treatments' i get for taking part in three combat operations, seeing my son only 3 months out of his first year, my wife divorcing me because i was always gone (military is 75% divorce rate). The buddy of mine that i had to coax or from under his bed a few days before 4th of July last year because he thought a m-80 that went off while he was sleeping was mortar fire - goddamn right he gets social treatment. The men who came before us stay those services in place. The soldiers in WWI with 'shell-shock' pushed the government for mental health services. Civil War vets dying sick and in poverty, a devastated generation of men coming back from the trenches of Europe in WWI is what caused the VA to be formed in the first place.

Not wanting to be killed in your job is not special treatment.

Expecting others to do their share is not special treatment.

Especially when by law you MUST register for the draft to be possibly conscripted into military service or face a felony conviction and a hefty fine/prison sentence.

Equality is not a smorgasbord, you don't get to just take what you want and leave the rest. I think that is what many people forget. They want the thick steak & chocolate cake but no squash & brussel sprouts. If you are only demanding the stuff you 'want', how is it EQUAL when everyone else is expected to pick up the slack?

Equality is not special, its equal.
