Louie Season 5 Episode 8 "The Road - Part 2" Discussion Thread

This is my take on it, but I'm not smart, so I'm probably wrong, but I think a lot of this season, or at least these last two episodes, were about Louis struggling with becoming an old cynical asshole. Whenever somebody asks him of something, or tries to interact with him, Louis' first response is No, showing that his go to reaction is just not to interact with strangers anymore. His reluctance to talk to his driver, telling the guy Roger is dead for no reason, he was even reluctant to do the photo with the ladies. Occasionally he realizes he's being a dick for no reason and decides not to be, which is a good way of showing it, because you don't just become full blown old cynical man one day, its a gradual process, and the scene with him dancing with the ladies is showing that he's still struggling with the process.

Another sign of him becoming an old cynical asshole is him immediately writing off Kenny's lifestyle and comedy simply because its not Louis' style. Even though Kenny is living a fine life, having more fun, and is getting more laughs, Louis thinks "Well I'm still right, because I'm more experienced", hence his breakdown when he finally admits that he does in fact think farts are funny. I think that was kind of a "Maybe everyone around me isn't wrong, its me. I'm wrong."

And finally I believe Kenny's death was just Louis' good ole "Horrible shit can happen at any moment" style of writing. Just like with the model and that lady who died on New Years.

I liked the ending scene with his daughter though, but I don't think it was meant entirely to be a happy little ending. It kind of shows where the whole old cynical man attitude comes from, because even if he's a dick to everyone outside, the thing that still matters most to him are his kids. If he can make his kids smile and laugh and hold their interest, he really doesn't care how other people perceive him. As long as his kids are healthy and love him, fuck everybody else, which although is kind of sweet, its also a very dangerous way to start viewing the world when you live in a society.
