Maher: 'Islam Is a Problem,' Saying Syrian Refugees Have Values At Odds With Ours 'May Not Be Wrong'

This country is just as much my country as it is “your country,” unless you’re Native American. I think the fact that so many Americans support Trump is enough for us to be concerned about extreme beliefs, considering his shameless insults toward pretty much anyone who isn’t white or male, and his proposed policies reminiscent of those implemented by Hitler. The values depicted in his campaign border on white supremacist ideals. No, I am not from a country where there are people with assault rifles at every corner, but if I were unlucky enough to be from such a country, the fact that I would have escaped to the U.S. says a lot about my opinions on my original country's policies. We can’t ignore the reality that guns actually are a problem in the U.S., and a black man living in certain parts of the country would actually have a pretty high risk of walking to 711 and being shot, and it happens all the time. Same goes for sexism. I have a risk of being raped, especially at university campuses, which are intended to be the pinnacle of progressive values. I also have a risk of being significantly underpaid because of my gender. I don't see any female presidents either. Such issues are a reality in many countries. I am grateful to be an American, and in theory, the Constitution is supposed to be fair and grant equal rights to everyone, but we can’t pretend that it is enforced that way and that there isn't any institutional discrimination against gay and black people, as well as other minorities, in this country.

Saying that you have a wife from a Muslim minority country and therefore can’t be biased is like saying you have a black friend and therefore can’t be racist. The rights that we all have here come from the Constitution, which strictly forbids targeting religions, as I’m sure you know. No one expects you to like or accept “Muslim Culture” or Islam, or even understand them, but as an American you should probably know that the rights you mentioned come from the same document that strictly forbids religious persecution, and none of my rights as an American are anything for which you can take credit.

As I said, you can’t assume that all Muslims support those policies implemented in Saudi Arabia. You talk about sexism, but my entire family has supported me to make a life for myself as an independent woman, which is still an issue in most cultures. Many Syrian refugees have already entered the U.S. in recent months and no attacks have come from them.

Most of all, "Muslim culture" isn't one culture. It makes up nearly a quarter of the world, most of its followers aren't even in the Middle East, and you know that very well.
