I wish I could keep a tally of "that's way overkill for pfSense" and "you'll never run Suricata, VPN, and 1G internet on that."

I don't think dual 2620s are overkill at all. They wouldn't cut it for what I do. If they really are overkill, then a $30 overkill pfSense server is amazing. Now, is a 2U server in general "overkill" in terms of power and space usage?

Maybe. Depends on the house/ apt/ location. I don't know what that server draws, idle.

The Gen 9 is a bit overkill-y. You'd have 8 cores and 16 threads, as well as 32GB RAM. All you need is 2 cores and 4GB RAM. If you have Suricata, VPN, pfBlockerNG, HAProxy and more, maybe 4 cores and 16GB. Still not using much.

As much as I personally want a rack-mounted pfSense box with iLO, even I wouldn't use that much electricity for it. Now, if you virtualize pfSense, and have a few other VMs going, then maybe.

Best of luck.
