Rate and critique my resume

Hey buddy. I was job hunting a few months ago. Interviewed with over 15 different engineering companies. I ended up with one of GE’s biggest competitor: Siemens. (In the power generation field)

First, I want to address the amount of interviews I achieved. In order to get that, I had to put in about 40 applications. I looked through some of your posts and understand you are having problems with finding a job. You’re going to have to apply to many many many companies. GE is a really big company, meaning competitive applicants. I will tell you what I did with my resume, but i just want you to understand that you need to put in a lot of effort applying to many many many many many companies. Because you will be disappointed if you only apply to big companies (I had 14 rejections).

Is the school you went to, in the same state as you are living in now? If so, use your school’s career website and resources to find out who is hiring in your area. Go to [engineeringjobs .com]. You cannot be picky. You need to mass apply, but don’t forget to differentiate: adjust your resume to each companies’ expectations and desires. Also include cover letters.

Here is basically what I did with my resume: Because you have no job experience in the field, you should include your projects and experience you had in school. Put clubs you had in school. The restaurant job would be at the very bottom of your resume. All of the information in your resume is too chunky, too much words. Save the extra information about yourself in the cover letter. This is a technical job. You need to express your hard skills on paper, and soft skills in the interview. Technical jobs are way too competitive

  1. Throw away the statement, add a summary instead. I.e. summary: Biomed engineer with experience in (something you did in school that fits with the position you’re applying OR another thing about you like “fast learner or something”), (another thing), (another thing).

  2. After summary add your projects and experience in school related to engineering or (computer or whatever related if it applies to the job posting)

  3. After that put your skills, don’t just put matlab and java.

Do: Java- used java to construct, analyst, and organize data (Make it fancier though)

  1. Clubs and extracurricular activities

  2. Your restaurant experience, put that you worked there 2015-2018 and emphasize on things that follow the job posting such as neatness, organization, efficiency.

But yeah most importantly, apply to a lot of companies, big and small.

The hardest part is the interviews, that’s what will get you the job and distinguish you from other people.
