Overall, I recommend getting Ernie Ball Regular Slinky, especially for a beginner. Pretty cheap, works well in standard, and light enough that they should be easy to play. I think Ernie Ball sounds great and last a good amount of time.

If you're looking to play hard rock with drop tunings, you can upgrade to Ernie Ball Heavy Top Skinny Bottoms. I play almost exclusively with these, even in standard.

Don't fall into the trap of getting heavier strings because you can muscle through, it's something a lot of beginners do/did, myself included. Lighter strings are so much easier to play and great for learning on. Only get heavier strings if you really need them.
