women who are told they’re going to be maids only to be forced into “sex work” in India

that happens in Western Europe, too. in countries like Switzerland where prostitution is perfectly legal (there are brothels next to IKEA in some towns) you can bet the prostitutes are not swiss women and that some (not all, but some) are women from poor countries who thought they were going to be nannies or maids.

when you commercialize sex those capitalist "free" market forces come into play, and in these countries the demand for sex exceeds the "supply" so naturally trafficking goes up.

whenever I bring this up though I get shot down by people who say am anti-sex worker and hate prostitutes or a pearl clutching conservative (I'm neither thanks). it's so weird.
