Is it common to not feed a guest when eating with family?

I was asked to join for dinner at maybe 2-3 out of 10 of the Swedish friends I had. Having an Iranian background, as well as a lot of friends from different places (Arabs, Kurds, Russians, Bosnians etc) I remember being very shocked when the parents of my Swedish friends would ask me to stay in their rooms while they had dinner.

In my parents culture (and the cultures of listed ethnicities above) it is considered a shame to not serve food to a guest. I understand being frugal or not being prepared to serve a guest, but in my opinion hospitality trumps frugality every day of the week. Especially since all my Swedish friends got to eat dinner with us and we’re served loads of snacks and beverages.
