Considering buying a PS3 for a 12 year old. Can you guys answer a few questions?

  • 1.) i'd recommend getting a 500GB superslim, it's pretty reliable and unlike other versions it has a manual sliding door for the disk tray which can be pretty easy access if you want to clean the dust out or fix/clean the laser lens. it also can prevent your games from getting stuck inside in case it stopped working or ran into some issues. the latest model and comes with alot of bundles like The Last Of Us bundle, God of War Ascension (which comes with a nice ride PS3) or a GTA V one if you haven't tried these games yet.
  • 2.) the PS3 itself isn't region locked at all, when making a PSN account you get an option to choose which country you're from. however some games are region locked (look up NTSC and PAL). it doesn't mean they aren't gonna work, but if your game is purchased from the USA and your DLC from a europe PSN store it won't work and vice versa.
  • 3.) the only PS3 that is backwards compatible are the earliest models (20GB-60GB-80GB models). they aren't in production anymore and i wouldn't recommend buying a used or a refurbished one, just stay away from the fat models because they were pretty common to getting a YLOD(yellow light of death) and noise/heating problems since the chips in them are pretty old compared to the ''advanced'' ones in the slim/superslim which produce less heat and consume less power usage. with that said, you can still buy some of the PS2 classics from the PS store and some of them are even HD remasters which can look pretty good on an HDTV.
  • 4.) Little Big Planet series, Minecraft, Lego Star Wars, Jak and Daxter collection if he likes cars maybe you could get him Motorstorm, Gran turismo 5 or 6.
