Eli5: Why is Mad Max so popular? Why do people think it's such a great movie?

It exciting to watch, most "action movies" are rather slow paced compared to mad max fury road. This movie just goes on and keeps it going, one action scene is over and the next one begins. And that's what i enjoyed. For me it was even a little bit too much action, i was looking forward for the next quiet moment to have some time to think about what happened and relax a bit. But usually those moments just didn't come often.

So basically i got (more then) what i expected, over the top action non stop. And i say that even though this movie was really hyped and praised before i went to see it. When this happens i usually walk out and think "not as good as i thought based on the reviews!" but this time i wasn't disappointed.

In addition to all the action i did enjoy the beautiful landscapes, all the crazy characters and cars. Everything was well done. Every character looked like painting, the details, costumes and make up - impressive. The scenes that would make wonderful wallpapers in this movie is uncountable. Unlike most action movies it isn't afraid to show colors, which i enjoyed a lot. And did i already mention the landscapes are impressive!

The story is a bit short, but it makes more sense than most other movies. I'd even say most of the dialogue got replaced with fighting, in a good way. The characters interact a lot and you learn a lot about all of the characters by their actions and not by boring conversations. They fight for each other, they die for each other and they do what has to be done. The movie isn't about the history of those people or how they got where they are (which leaves a shitload of opportunities for follow up movies), this movie shows you the moment in their lives. No introductions, no long explanation how people got there. It just throws you in this situation and keeps the action going. I guess the beginning of the movie is a little bit random for that reason. And in my opinion the end is a bit too easy compared to all the crap they had to go through before... the last few scenes didn't really feel like the rest of the movie.

TL;DR It's a great action movie with compelling characters, it's filled with beautiful images made for the big screen.

10/10 Movie to watch in a cinema

8/10 Movie to watch on a small screen, i think the movie is a bit overrated at the moment and it's made for big screens. My prediction is the movie will lose a lot of it's appeal on TV.
