go to any video by someone you want to subscribe to
click on their channel name
in the upper right, there should be a button that says "subscribe". Press that.
Congrats. You are now subscribed to a YouTube channel in New Pipe.
To look for new videos by the creators you subscribe to (in New Pipe):
go to the "Subscriptions" Tab. The symbol is a rectangle with two lines sticking out. By default it's the right most tab.
press the "All" button (upper right with an RSS logo on top
In the upper left, is a circular button with a question mark. Press it and make sure that you do not enable fast mode (it says either "enable fast mode" or "disable fast mode" and "OK") This will scrape the actual youtube channel manually instead of trusting YouTube to tell you of new content.
press your finger to the middle of the screen and drag down to initiate a scan. You will see the "loading" logo as all your subscriptions are fetched. It takes about 5 seconds to scrape 100 subscribed channels.
