I want to get into RC planes, how do I start?

Some RC planes are harder than others to fly. That's why you need to select a first plane that is of a type called a "Trainer". This trainer plane is easier to fly and learn on.

Select a Trainer Plane I would suggest the Horizon Delta Ray which should be available at your local hobby shop. I know a couple of people that learned by themselves on it. I like it because it's a little smaller than the commonly recommended Apprentice. More importantly you can remove the landing gear and hand launch it then glide in with the power off and belly land on grass. When belly landing on grass you don't need to line up with a runway. Launching and landing are the two hardest parts and that really simplifies things when you're getting started. The Delta Ray also has the SAFE assist technology for when you're in the air. Then once you've done a couple dozen flights like that, add the landing gear.

The Delta Ray RTF also comes with a transmitter that will actually be useful going forward. If you have the money get an RC flight simulator. I trained with a sim for a few hours before my first flight and it really helped.

Learning

RC is fun but it will be more fun if you do a bit of learning about it first. Most people that just buy a plane and run to the park and thrown it in the air, don't have a very good experience. Reddit can be a good place to learn but I also suggest a forum called [RC Groups](www.rcgroups.com). It's the world's largest RC forum and most of what I know about RC I learned there. On RC Groups there is a Beginners Forum. Go there and read the stickies at the top. There is a ton of good info that will save you time and money.

Your First Flight

  • There are many local RC clubs that have people who will teach you to fly, usually for free. See if there is a club near you. If so you can skip the following steps.
  • Go somewhere like the middle of an empty football field with absolutely no trees or obstacles nearby. I know it sounds paranoid but it's worth driving an hour if necessary to such a place for your first flights.
  • Make sure there's very little or no wind.
  • If you can find an experienced RC pilot to go with you on your first flight it can be very helpful, but not everyone has that option.
