Just downloaded the game, any recomendations for a rookie?

It’s heavy pay to win so prepared to always be behind those who spend big.

That's the impression I got when I just checked it out. That's a bit off-putting, frankly. I occasionally spent some money on Pokemon Go, but I liked how it was balanced in this regard -- you can gain XP faster, have more chances to hatch (more incubators) or catch (through extra Raid passes) a Pokemon with marginally better IV than otherwise if you spent a lot of money on the game, but the most important investment, by far, was still time to grind the main resource to power them up, and there was no meaningful way to obtain it through a purchase.
The maximum 50 daily coins you can earn through even just moderately active gameplay would cost you fifty cents in the store. You get one daily Raid pass for free, additional ones cost 100 coins, so the earned coins cover an extra one every other day. Apart from the extra chances to catch a marginally better version of one Pokemon than you'd have for free, the main motivation to buy even more passes is social, not a meaningful advantage in the game. I still know some local players who spend hundreds each month, and many more who spend maybe around €5 per month on average like myself, so I'm sure it still works out business-wise. Possibly even better than putting off players through an obvious pay-to-win model.
