Olympic athlete looking to plan for the short and long term future.

I've been around the sport for several years, including those at the highest level. Long story short:

  • It's not worth it to simply train to become an Olympian.
  • The only way it's wort it is if you earn a college scholarship and compete as a student-athlete and get a free or near-free education. Then parlay that education into a normal career.
  • Most everyone is chewed up and spit out. Only a few make a smooth transition into something else (like Hoy).
  • If you spend your young adult years training your body (in sport) instead of training your mind (in college), the only thing you'll be qualified to do afterwards is coach in that sport. Yes, you will be highly qualified...but coaching doesn't pay well either.

Sport is entertainment. Period. And it's as brutal as the entertainment industry.

Track cycling is not a "big money" sport...to say the least. So, all you have to gain from this is glory...but glory don't pay the bills.

If you have the work ethic to become a top athlete (which is seems you do), apply that work ethic to your education and professional training, and you'll be guaranteed success.
