It's hard to believe that Terri Welles was seriously overweight at age 14 (81.6 kilograms, no less).
Ten years later, when she was Playboy's Miss December 1980, the Santa Monica-born beauty was 27.2 kilograms lighter and measured 36C (natural)-24-36. Within six months she was unveiled as Playmate of the Year for 1981.
That same year the former air stewardess married NHL ice hockey player Charlie Simmer. The couple had a daughter. They divorced in 1986.
In 1997 Miss Welles started an online business selling pictures of herself. This resulted in litigation by Playboy Enterprises. The outcome of the suit was that virtually all of Welles' uses of the terms "Playboy" and "Playmate of the Year" were considered nominative uses, and did not infringe copyright.
The court ruling was upheld on appeal, and Miss Welles continued her online business until 2006, when she closed it down.
