Ron Trent explains the roots of "Deep House" - Interesting read on his personal FB.

So basically, if you accept this view, it means that if you're not oldschool, and just getting into this music now, listen it, read books, you're still shit and should just shut up and listen to the elders. You know what? Fuck off. As Banksy said, bad artists imitate, good artists steal — and the difference is, when someone steals from you, you don't have it anymore. Brostep stole the word dubstep — Benga doesn't have it anymore, Skrillex does. Same with future house/future bass, same with deep house now. And yeah, the old sound was more intelligent, it was more sophisticated, and it's like the 70s all over again, growing from spectacular Dark side of the moon to primitive Sex Pistols, just like the 50s, from Dave Brubeck to sex-crazed (for the era) rock'n'roll, you get the drift — but wait, you know what? Music is not about the complexity and the elegance and the dusty old records and switching from 9/8 to 4/4. Well, may be it is for you and me when we sit at home behind our monitor speakers and listen to new releases, and instead of enjoying them, just loop one bar to understand how did this dude make his kick and bass both sound so tight without sidechaining. But really, music is about being drunk in a dark room with a boy or a girl that you really want to fuck, moving your body, laughing and having a great fucking time.

I'm sorry for this incoherent rant: I'm drunk, just came home from having a really good time at a party with an DJ who put one beatport top10 and top40 from low-kbps mp3s on his iPad and couldn't beatmatch two copies of 4:33, but he still was awesome and kept us entertained. So, to sum it up: if someone new comes and takes your place, and your name, and your hype, you deserve it. Even if you're good, oldschool, and know a lot of shit in history books, they still got more rough energy, and that's what counts.

(And yes, I know it was Picasso, that's the fucking point).
