French elections: "Ne pas vendre le peau de l'ours avant de l'avoir tué"

This is the culmination of neoliberalism. When trade is freed, it helps those able to afford manicured lawns in nice neighbourhoods with good schools. By definition, most of us cannot live in such places. Indeed, most people live in the areas surrounding these 1% neighbourhoods, if not realistically, then metaphorically.

From our driveways every morning, we see the large houses with the swimming pools and the helipads and wonder, where did I go wrong? The answer to this has always been difficult, but having the inequality in our faces every day forces it to the front of the mind.

We are told that if our governments cut taxes at the top, the top will spend more on consumer goods and the wealth will trickle down to the rest of us. While long run, this may be true, but as most economists will tell us, in the long run, we'll all be dead.

So, we in the 99% need to focus on the short term. And, it's very easy to blame les etrangers or die auslanders; from the politicians perspective, it is a harmless-to-them way to distract from their own failings, as outsiders don't vote and therefore have no effect on their job security.

People like Trump, Le Pen, Farage, and Wilders are not racist, nazi scum; they are opportunists; taking advantage of the populace's frustration to get power.
