Why do they have to be so socially awkward?

Many furries are closeted and would physically melt if anyone close to them knew that they're a furry. Personally, I'm so deeply closeted that no one but my best friend knows that I'm actually a furry. You wouldn't know it if you met me, honestly. There's enough other furries who are just like that and you'll never realize that they're also part of the community. Keep in mind those people may also be less likely to attend cons or run around with fursuits. Add to that the fact that since those people are behaving less extreme, you may encounter them but forget about them. Finally, the more unhinged someone becomes, the louder they may get. Compare that to groups where a vocal minority can skew the perception of the group as a whole.

Also don't forget that in anything called a 'fandom' or 'community' you'll have more nerds and more people on a spectrum. Humans, especially vulnerable ones, will feel more comfortable in a group of people where they can share their interest and feel safe - doesn't matter if it's e-sports, furries, otaku, LARP or tabletop games.

At the same time, this is also why furries are often so helpful and friendly - most know how shit life is and what it feels like to be ostracized or bullied.

But personally I'd recommend spending your time on more constructive things.
