Stairs that turn into elevators to people in wheelchairs

Disagree completely.

Look at the use case, If you have an older store or a post office building with steps, which isn’t wheelchair accessible today and/or limited frontage space such as in a city, these are perfect.

It’s rare they’d need to be activated so they’d be in stair mode most of the time. As shown in the video there is another staircase so it doesn’t obstruct anyone else, meaning they’d work in all but the most high traffic locations, so no inconvenience to any existing customers.

Almost all wheelchair lifts are single person sized and can carry an assistant if needed. The power outage argument is bizarre as every other elevator and escalator runs on the same magic electricity, so unless you live in a 3rd world country (or parts of America I guess) it’s irrelevant.

This is good accessible retrofit design.
