Beard doesn’t seem to get that a relationship is mutual. She likes you as much you like her, so she’s making a conscious choice to be with you.

But in his mind, you’re with Nilla only because you got there first, like a kid snatching up a kickball at the first stroke of recess bell. Which means the only way Beard knows how to win her over is scare you off. Like a playground bully, except he can’t even play the part properly.

Beard probably believes Nilla will mindlessly come to him once you’re out of the picture. The conclusion being, surprise surprise, that Beard is the one objectifying Nilla, not you.
